Dr. Saenkova was born in Moscow. She graduated from the Russian State University. In 1994 she started working at the State Tretyakov Gallery and continued her education at St Tikhon Theological University. Her Ph.D. thesis examined the theme of icons function in the liturgical services of the Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin during the 16th and 17th centuries.

She has published more than 100 works on the Old Russian art and iconography and was the curator of several exhibitions at the Tretyakov Gallery (Simos Ushakov, the Royal Icon Painter in 2015, Byzantine Masterpieces in 2017, Christian Art of the 13th-19th Centuries from Bulgarian Museums in 2018) and the Byzantine and Christian Museum of Athens (Russian Art after the Fall of Constantinople in 2016). Since 2019 she is the Head of the Department of Medieval Russian Art of the Tretyakov Gallery.
